<p>Joe Pullum wurde am 25. Dezember 1905 in Anniston (Alabama) geboren; über sein frühes Leben ist wenig bekannt. Als Nachtclubsänger in <a href="Houston" title="Houston">Houston</a> (<a href="Texas" title="Texas">Texas</a>) machte er Mitte der 1930er Jahre eine Reihe von Aufnahmen. Pullums größter Erfolg war sein selbstgeschriebener Song <i>Black Gal What Makes Your Head So Hard?</i> (1934). Der Song verkaufte sich gut und wurde von <a href="Leroy_Carr" title="Leroy Carr">Leroy Carr</a>, <a href="Lightnin%E2%80%99_Hopkins" title="Lightnin’ Hopkins">Lightnin’ Hopkins</a>, <a href="Clifton_Chenier" title="Clifton Chenier">Clifton Chenier</a>, <a href="Mance_Lipscomb" title="Mance Lipscomb">Mance Lipscomb</a>, <a href="Mary_Johnson_(Bluess%C3%A4ngerin)" title="Mary Johnson (Bluessängerin)">Mary Johnson</a>, <a href="Josh_White" title="Josh White">Josh White</a>, <a href="Jimmie_Gordon" title="Jimmie Gordon">Jimmie Gordon</a>, Robert Shaw und anderen gecovert.<sup id="cite_ref-allmusic_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-allmusic-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Pullums nachfolgende Platten hatten weit weniger Erfolg.<sup id="cite_ref-brb20_2-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-brb20-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Pullum nahm zwischen April 1934 und Februar 1936 in vier Sessions insgesamt 30 Titel auf, darunter mehrere Fortsetzungen von <i>Black Gal</i>.<sup id="cite_ref-wirz_3-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-wirz-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Dabei wurde er im Wesentlichen von zwei Pianisten begleitet: Andy Boy bei der dritten und längsten Session, Rob Cooper bei den anderen drei Sessions.<sup id="cite_ref-brb20_2-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-brb20-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Später trat Pullum im Radio beim Sender KTLC in Houston auf, unterstützt von dem Pianisten Preston „Peachy“ Chase.<sup id="cite_ref-brb20_2-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-brb20-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> In den 1940er Jahren zog Pullum nach <a href="Los_Angeles" title="Los Angeles">Los Angeles</a> (<a href="Kalifornien" title="Kalifornien">Kalifornien</a>)<sup id="cite_ref-allmusic_1-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-allmusic-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> und interpretierte <i>Black Gal</i> 1951 in Begleitung von <a href="Lloyd_Glenn" title="Lloyd Glenn">Lloyd Glenn</a> als <i>My Woman</i> bei Swingtime Records.<sup id="cite_ref-wirz_3-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-wirz-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Angeblich nahm er 1953 auch ein Demo bei <a href="Specialty_Records" title="Specialty Records">Specialty Records</a> auf.<sup id="cite_ref-brb20_2-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-brb20-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Joe Pullum starb 1964 im Alter von 58 Jahren in Los Angeles und wurde in Houston beigesetzt. Alle seine bekannten Aufnahmen wurden auf zwei Alben zusammengestellt, die 1996 von <a href="Document_Records" title="Document Records">Document Records</a> veröffentlicht wurden.<sup id="cite_ref-wirz_3-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-wirz-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
